Requests
for help
We
desperately need adult helpers and leaders.
Whatever skills you have, whether scouting
or life skills, we need your help.
So
what is scouting?
Scouting
offers challenge and adventure to 400,000
young people aged 6-25 in the UK and
over 28 million worldwide in 216 countries
and is celebrating its centenary this
year. We believe in helping our members
fulfil their potential by working in
teams, learning by doing and thinking
for themselves.
Through
the adventure of Scouting, young people
get to take risks in a safe environment,
and have their first taste of responsibility.
We give young people experiences they'll
never forget. The sort of adventure
Scouting offers is the chance to experience
something different and the opportunity
to challenge themselves. When a Beaver
Scout wakes up the morning after a sleepover,
or a Cub Scout has just got over his/her
fear of heights by completing his/her
first abseil, or a Scout completes his/her
first sailing experience - that's adventure.
In
Scouting, we provide over 200 activities
from abseiling to zorbing ('that's falling
out of the sky in a foam ball in case
you were wondering). But Scouting isn't
just about activities for their own
sake. We encourage our young people
to feel the buzz of the challenge and
then reflect on what that means. Did
they have fun? Do they feel more confident?
Would they do it again?
All
this is made possible by the efforts
of trained voluntary adult leaders and
helpers. We make sure that each one
of our volunteers gets to make the best
use of their skills and talents. It's
something different from the norm, and
that's why a lot of people like it.
In fact, it's what's made us the largest
co-educational youth movement in the
country.
So
make a real difference for real youngsters.
Give something of real value, give yourself.
At
Beacon Hill we are growing as a group.
We now have two Beaver Colonies, two
full Cub Packs and one full Scout Troop.
We also have one big opportunity to
develop. With so many younger members
in the group we must expand the scouts.
That or the transition through scouting
comes to an abrupt end as we have 48
cubs trying to move into 24 scout places.
We also need to develop the next section
being Explorers. Without this our scouts
who reach 14 years old will shortly
have no alternative but to leave 1st
Beacon Hill to join a District group,
which we have found in the past has
not been successful. We would like to
offer them the opportunity to continue
their scouting where they started eight
years earlier. This is a time when scouting
really can have a major effect on their
whole life. Helping them make the right
decisions at this time in their lives
really does have an impact on their
future.
We
desperately need adult helpers and leaders.
Whatever skills you have, whether scouting
or life skills, we need your help.
So
you have read the words, you can see
the results, now make a real difference.
Take the first steps into a better future,
and have fun doing it.
Please
offer to help, even a few hours when
you can will really make a difference.
Ask any leader for more information
or contact Janet Richardson, Group Scout
Leader on 01621 893060.
Go
on, do it now.
Remember, you don't need to travel to
the other side of the world to make
a difference.
